Here and back again - a detectorists tale...
I've never written a blog before, and if you've ever read a good one before, then you'll probably be able to tell as you read on! I wanted to share my story, how I got into metal detecting, what I've discovered over the years and what I hope to find in the future. I also wanted to share how I got into the position of trying to set up my own small business, the process I went through, the things I've learnt and how it pans out. I know I won't be rubbing shoulders with Bill Gates or Steve Jobs but if I make my initial outlay back and I see my products being worn in the field and the business keeps itself ticking over then I'll be quite happy with that outcome.
So, how did it all begin?
My interest in metal detecting began when I was 10 years old, I was in a local branch of Martins the newsagent (are there any left now?) and I saw a copy of Treasure Hunting. As soon as I opened the cover and read the stories of finding coins etc I was hooked. I always had a love for history from an early age and I had inherited my dads coin collection so loved coins too. It kind of made sense to go out and find my own history and coins.

I got my first metal detector from Tandy (now I know there's none of those left in the UK!). I still have it somewhere. Well actually, to tell the truth I had a different detector which I think my parents got for me 2nd hand but thankfully I put the batteries in the wrong way and fried it. Good job really as the new one I got from Tandy was much better, cheap but still much better.
I got permission from the local parish council to use my detector in the local play park and I had a great time there finding loads of pre-decimal pennies and pocket spills along with the odd artefact. I still have those finds nearly 40 years later. One day if I ever get the chance I'd like to have a go at restoring the toy matchbox cars I found back then. Yeah, as if that will ever happen!

As I got older, I started a paper round or two and started saving for a better detector, a C-Scope 770D. My parents said if I got to £100 they would add the rest, I can't remember what the balance was but I hit my target and they provided the rest. I think I bought my new detector from Millets. To be honest, I can't remember finding much with the 770D and my memory skips to the C-Scope Promett II that I was actually given by a good friend and detecting mentor at the time.
It was with the Promett II that I found my first hammered. But that's a story for next time!
Keep checking back, for the next thrilling instalment of my blog LOL! I should be taking delivery of my initial stock of metal detecting patches by mid November. And I'm hoping to add some t-shirts to my shop by the end
of November.
Thanks for visiting!
